Strasbourg is known as the capital of Christmas in France! Being five kilometers away from Germany, there is a huge German influence in the buildings within the city. It makes for a perfect vacation spot for Christmas!
Travel
It takes about an hour and forty-five minutes to get to Strasbourg from Paris by train. The train is a fast train. I am pretty sensitive to motion sickness and did feel a little queazy on it. For those that struggle, sit on the first level of the train and make sure you are facing the way the train is moving. My husband does not suffer from motion sickness and he did absolutely fine.
I loved the train. You see small villages in the distance, rivers, ponds, and castles. The train ride is an experience in itself. Most tickets are between $25-$50 if you book thirty days in advance. You can book trains off of the SNCP official website.
Once you arrive at the main train station in Strasbourg, I would recommend staying in the old town of Strasbourg. The taxi ride to this part of town is about 5-10 minutes.
Christmas Markets
There are thirteen Christmas Markets spread out throughout the Old Town of Strasbourg. Among the thirteen, my favorite, and some of the most famous are at the Place de la Cathédrale, Place Broglie and Village du Portage. You will have lots of opportunities wandering around the different markets, picking out ornaments, trying home-made candies, and of course, trying the vin chaud (mulled wine) and chocolate chad (hot chocolate).
Christmas Market Food
These baguette flambées are truly amazing! They sell them at the Christmas Markets. It is a wood-fired pizza topped with different toppings such as creme Fraiche, onion, tomato…etc. I would highly recommend!
The picture is a bit blurry, but this is Spätzle. It is a type of pasta/noodle that is usually served with cheese. You’ll find Spätzle being served in giant pans all around Christmas Markets in Strasbourg!
Of course, you have to pick up a Bretzel! A Bretzel is made of brioche dough and is the French version of the German Pretzel.
Petite France
Another place to wander is Petite France. It is known for it’s cobblestone streets, canals, and well-preserved half-timbered homes. There are many restaurants and stores. You can walk along the canals and admire the homes. It is located near Old Town Strasbourg and all is very doable to walk.
Strasbourg Cathedral – Notre Dame
The cathedral is located in Old Town Strasbourg. There is no entrance fee for this cathedral but it does cost money to go on guided tours or up in the towers. It is a beautiful example of gothic art.
