What to See in Austria – Four Days

The hills are ALIVE in Austria. Talk about a dream come true to visit this beautiful country! I was in awe over the scenery, culture, and tea displays as we went to three different cities in Austria. Here are four days in Austria that will leave you wanting more of this country!

Day 1- Salzburg

  • Old Town
  • Cafe Mozart
  • Werfen

Old Town

Old Town Salzburg was filled with eclectic shops, chocolatiers, restaurants, and more. You have to spend a few hours wandering through and investigating everything it has to offer. The Old Town backs up to the Salzach, river. Be aware that the month of June is one of the rainiest months for this area and you must bring an umbrella!

Cafe Mozart – Getreidegasse 22, 5020 Salzburg, Austria

Located in Old Town Salzburg, is the famous restaurant, “Cafe Mozart”. This cafe was a popular spot for writers and musicians in the early 1900s. This cafe is known for Austrian food and desserts.

Look at this Apple Strudel! They serve it with vanilla ice cream or the traditional way with the vanilla creme sauce. It was SO good!

For all of you tea drinkers out there, this tea set up was so beautiful! They offer you milk or lemon and give you water to clean off your spoon. It was delightful!

Here you can see the Weiner Schnitzel, and Stroganoff.

Last but not least, you have to try the Salzburger Nockerl! It is a sweet souffle that commemorates the three peaks of Salzburg.

Werfen

Drive or take the train about twenty minutes away to this small village called, Werfen. In this village, you can take a small hike or drive to the Sound of Music filming location for the song, “Do-Re-Mi. This meadow was probably the highlight of my trip, let alone life. We went about two hours before sundown and it was the perfect setting for frolicking, picnicking, and laughing.

If you want to drive, take this street on the left and you will snake around a few curves before you get to the meadow. From the center of town to the meadow, it probably takes five minutes by car.

Here is a picture of some of the signs for the hike. It was very clearly marked. You need to look for the word, Gschwandtanger Wiesn! That is the name of the meadow!

Here is a glimpse of the hike! It was not too difficult but definitely a workout!

Once you get to the meadow, you will see the beautiful High Werfen Castle and sheer alpine peaks. Truly the definition of, “breathtaking.”

Day 2 – Salzburg

  • Frohnburg Palace
  • Hellbrunn Palace
  • Winkler Terrace

Frohnburg Palace – Hellbrunner Allee 53, 5020 Salzburg, Austria

This palace was once a private residence and is now used as a music academy. This is a location in the Sound of Music where Maria sings, “I Have Confidence.”

Hellbrunn Palace – Fürstenweg 37, 5020 Salzburg, Austria

Here is the location to the gazebo used in the Sound of Music. This palace is located just outside of the city center and is a beautiful palace to walk around and enjoy the outdoors.

Winkler Terrace – Mönchsberg

This terrace has probably the best view of the city. You can get up to the terrace from walking from the base up to the top, about twenty minutes, or an elevator ride to the very top. It is the terrace of the modern art museum in Salzburg,

Day 3- Hallstatt – Vienna

  • Hallstatt
  • Cafe Central

Hallstatt

On your way to Vienna from Salzburg, you HAVE to stop at this beautiful mountain town named, Hallstatt. This town is known for its views of the lake and the fairytale like Alpine houses. It holds some of the world’s oldest salt mines. We did not have time to go to the salt mines, but we did see the transportation to go there. If you are taking a train into the city, it will take you to the opposite side of the lake. You will then need to take a ferry over to the town central. That seems wonderful itself!

Cafe Central – Herrengasse 14, 1010 Wien, Austria

This Cafe in Vienna is known for housing some of the most famous philosophers, psychologists, writers, and creators of all time. Located at Herrengasse 14, 1010 Wien, Austria, this cafe is worth stopping by and having a Viennese coffee.

I was so excited to see this in person! It was stunning!

Day 4 – Vienna

  • Schoenbrunn Palace
  • Graben
  • Austrian National Library
  • Hofburg Palace

Schoenbrunn Palace

Schoenbrunn Palace is one of Vienna’s most popular tourist attractions. It is a beautiful location to go to, wander through the gardens (for free) and eat at one of the cafes located on the premises. It is located about an hour outside of Vienna, but worth the trip.

Graben – 1010 Wien, Austria

This square is located in one of Vienna’s top shopping districts. The streets leading up to this square were filled with high-end shopping and restaurants. One of my FAVORITE stores to go into was one of the food markets, called “Julius Meinl.” If you want Austrian luxurious teas, coffee, meats, cheeses, or snacks, head into that store! This brand became my favorite Earl Grey!

Austrian National Library – Josefsplatz 1, 1015 Wien, Austria

This library was absolutely stunning. You could wander through it for hours. It was the most beautiful library I have ever seen. The tickets are 8 euros each and definitely worth it.

Hofburg Palace – 1010 Vienna, Austria

The Hofburg was the principal imperial palace of the Habsburg dynasty. It is located in the center of Vienna and was build in the 13th century. We were not able to go inside due to our limited time in Vienna, but enjoyed walking along the premises.
